What are Teaching Methods?

Teaching methods are strategies or techniques that educators use to deliver knowledge and facilitate learning. These methods vary based on the existing curriculum, objectives, age and the abilities of students.

Different types of Teaching Methods

There are various teaching methods used in institutions to teach school students. Each method has its own importance. These are important to study because they directly influence how students learn and engage with the subject matter. Some modern teaching methods are:

Discussion Method

The discussion Method encourages active participation through group discussions on a topic. It enhances critical thinking and communication skills. Teacher can provide his students with a certain topic, divide them into groups and ask them to give their views on the topic.

Demonstration Method

Students understand more when teacher teaches the theory using a model, experiment or any other technique. The teacher demonstrates a scientific experiment or concept, which students observe and learn from. It helps students visualize concepts and processes. Its main aim is to make abstract concepts clear.

Experiential Learning

It involves hands-on activities, simulations, field trips, or real-life projects where students engage with the material experientially. Experiential learning increases engagement and helps with retention of information. This method helps to develop a deeper understanding through doing and reflecting.

Inquiry-Based Learning

Students investigate questions and problems, developing research and analytical skills through exploration and discovery. In this method, the teacher acts as a guide or facilitator and students learn through their curiosity and inquiry. The main aim of this method is to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.

Flipped Classroom

Flipped learning is a newer method of teaching where students learn at home through reading material or online lectures or content. Later teachers discuss the learning content in the classroom. This method aims is to promote collaborative and self-paced learning.

Spaced Learning

In this method, the material is presented by the teacher multiple times by taking breaks at regular intervals. Also, the content is repeated several times so that the retention power of students increases and they could easily recall the information.

Project-Based Learning

Students work on real-world projects, applying critical thinking and teamwork to create solutions, enhancing engagement and practical understanding. It helps to connect the curriculum with the real world.

Blended Learning

It is the combination of two methods- traditional methods and online education. It makes the learning process more flexible. With the use of this method, students can learn at their own pace and independently.

Inductive-Deductive Method

The Inductive-Deductive Method is a combination of two teaching methods: inductive and deductive.

In inductive method, the teacher presents certain examples first then students observe patterns and draw conclusions or rules based on their observations.

In deductive method, the general formual or rule is stated first then students apply this formula or rule to the given problems.

Play way method

In this method, students learn through play. According to NEP-2020, there will be no standard textbooks for children aged 3-6. They will learn through different fun and activity-based learning. The main aim of this method is to provide a stress free environment to children and to support the holistic development of children.

Heuristic Method

In this method, students are presented with problems and students try to find solution using logic, creativity and prior knowledge. Teacher can’t provide a direct answer to the problem however he can act as a guide.
