Meaning and Definition of philosophy 

Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions about life, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. 

According to Russel: “Philosophy properly deals with matters of interest to the general educated public, and loses much of its value if only a few professionals can understand it." 

According to Aristotle : "Philosophy is a science which discovers the real nature of supernatural elements.”


According to Hendersen:“Philosophy is a rigorous, disciplined, guarded analysis of some of the most difficult problems which men have ever faced."

Nature of Philosophy

1. Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions about life, existence, knowledge, values, reason, and reality.

Need of Philosophy 

1. Helps us Think Clearly 

In today’s world, misinformation is everywhere. We hear so many opinions of people and find struggle to take the right decision. Philosophy helps us to think clearly, spot the truth, and make sense of complex ideas.

2. Helps us know what is right

Most of the times we struggle to find what is right and what is wrong for us. Sometimes it becomes very difficult for us to take one single decision in life. But philosophy helps us to distinguish between right and wrong, and what is fair in this world.

3. Helps us live meaningful life

Our life is of no worth if we fail to understand ourselves. This philosophy encourages us to question our belief, understand our thoughts and help us to live a more meaningful life.

4. Teach us ethical and moral values

Philosophy teaches what is right and wrong for us and what are our rights? It shows that morality is not just about laws but about living with integrity, empathy, and justice.
